Treasures from the Sea: An Arab Shipwreck in Indonesian waters

The Belitung Wreck, of an Arab dhow that dated all the way to the first half of the 9th century in the Indonesian waters, curiously carried a cargo almost exclusively Chinese. Dr Michael Flecker, who directed the archaeological excavation of this magnificent find, will discuss the excavation, the ceramic and non-ceramic cargo, dating, identifying the origin and likely route of the ship and the composition of the crew. What was this Arab vessel doing so far from home?

Flora And Fauna – A Quilt Exhibition

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is hosting a quilt exhibition of flora and fauna inspired quilts from 13 -20 August 2010 at the Botany Centre in the Gardens.  Ranging from 0.6 m x 0.9m to 2.5m x 2.5m in size, more than 30 quilts will be on display. These exquisite quilts are lovingly crafted by quilt specialist Ira Joseph and friends. Visitors can also expect daily demonstrations on quilt making during the exhibition period.  The details of the quilt exhibition are as follows:

Join us for an eclectic mix of visual delights and acoustic stimulation to celebrate the Chopin Year 2010 in Singapore.

Spend your Saturday evening at the Singapore Botanic Gardens and listen to 14-year old pianist Aleksandra Hortensja Dabek, a young talent from Chopin’s home country, play Chopin’s most famous pieces including his Mazurkas and the Revolutionary Etude.

Witness the Award Ceremony of the Sounds & Colours: Chopin in Singapore Photography competition which invited local photographers to interpret and place Chopin’s music, life and values in our culturally rich city. The winning images will be exhibited at the Visitor Centre at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Complete the evening with the main concert by avant-garde musicians DUO DUO, Katarzyna Borek and Karolina Piątkowska-Nowicka, who are joined by animation artist Maja Kuta to bring you a stunning visual and acoustical interpretation of Chopin’s music transcribed for piano and violin.

This visual spectacle is a delight for young and old to enjoy the beauty of Singapore’s Botanic Gardens while being entertained by equally beautiful music.

EcoKidz Quest 2010

EcoKidz Quest aims to raise awareness of our native wildlife through interesting educational games. Join us as we share about our native fauna and flora. Attractive rewards await you upon the completion of the quest. Learn how some animals morph, camouflage to survive and provide a natural service to us. Take a walk through our garden at the end of the day to learn more about our native flora.

Game Stations:

1 Fragrance and Scents – Visitors will learn more about our native flora and their fragrance. Participants are required to match the fragrance to the plants.

2 Matching Seeds – Plants have different kind of seeds that come in different shape and sizes. Learn how plants increase its chance of survival through the different type of seeds. Participants are required to match the seeds to their respective plants.

3 Mighty Morphing Power Creatures – Some animals go through different changes in physical form in its lifetime. This is known as metamorphosis. There are 2 types of metamorphosis; complete and incomplete. Participants will have to match the different insects to their respective type of metamorphosis in order to complete the quest.

4 Slimy Pest Control/ Where’s my home? – It is important to protect wildlife because they provide natural services to us such as pest control. Instead of using synthetic forms of pest control, why not conserve our natural resources to do the job for us? Participants will learn more about frogs at this station. Participants will also learn about the different habitats of the various native frog species on display at the booth. Children will love to shoot down the ‘pests’ with our EcoKidz power blaster!

5 Count the sticks – Animals survive in the wild using different methods. Some aggressive, some defensive. For the stick insecks, they defend themselves by camouflaging. Learn more about the stick insects and their way of survival at the station. Participants are to count the number of stick insects hiding in a display tank, and also to separate the eggs from the poop to complete the quest.

Price of books:
Books in all four official languages will be on sale.

  • English and Chinese books will cost $2 per copy;
  • Malay and Tamil books will cost $1 per copy;
  • English and Chinese magazines will cost $5 for a pack of 10 issues; and
  • Malay and Tamil magazines will cost $5 for a pack of 20 issues.

Limit of purchase:
Each customer can buy up to a maximum of 60 items (a pack of 10 or 20 issues of magazines is considered as one item).

Categorisation of books:
The books are categorised under ‘Adults’, ‘Young People’ and ‘Children’. Under each group, they are sub-divided into ‘Fiction’ and ‘Non-Fiction’.

The magazines are categorised under the four official languages.
